How salary deductions work in Jamaica (2026/27)

Every employee in Jamaica has four statutory deductions taken from their pay before it reaches their bank account. Your employer withholds them under the PAYE system and pays them over to Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).

Deduction Employee rate Calculated on
NIS (National Insurance Scheme) 3% Gross pay, up to J$5,000,000 a year
NHT (National Housing Trust) 2% Gross pay (no cap)
Education Tax 2.25% Gross pay less NIS and approved pension
Income tax (PAYE) 25% / 30% Statutory income above the threshold; 30% on the part above J$6,000,000

The 2026 income tax threshold

From 1 April 2026 the annual tax-free threshold rose from J$1,799,376 to J$1,902,360. That works out to about J$158,530 a month, J$73,235 a fortnight or J$36,584 a week. If your statutory income (gross pay minus NIS and approved pension contributions) is below that, you pay no income tax at all. The Government has said it plans to keep raising the threshold toward J$2 million by 2028.

People aged 65 or older, and pensioners on their pension income, get an additional J$250,040 tax-free. Tick the box in the calculator to apply it.

Worked example: J$250,000 a month

On a gross salary of J$250,000 a month (J$3 million a year) with no pension, the deductions are roughly: NIS J$7,500, NHT J$5,000, Education Tax J$5,456 and income tax J$20,993. Take-home pay is about J$211,051 a month — around 84% of gross.

On J$100,000 a month, statutory income is below the threshold, so there is no income tax. After NIS, NHT and Education Tax, take-home is about J$92,818.

How pension contributions lower your tax

Contributions to an approved pension scheme or retirement fund (up to 20% of gross pay) are deducted before income tax and Education Tax are worked out. Put in your pension percentage to see how much tax it saves you.

What your employer pays on top

Your salary is not the full cost of employing you. Employers also pay NIS (3%), NHT (3%), Education Tax (3.5%) and the HEART/NSTA Trust levy (3%). Open “Employer cost for this salary” in the calculator to see the total.
