Updated October 2026. Every year, thousands of Jamaican families face the same question after PEP results: which high school gives a child the best shot? Reputation helps, but it isn’t enough. This guide ranks Jamaica’s top high schools on things you can check — CSEC pass rates, Schools’ Challenge Quiz success, ISSA sports titles and the breadth of what students do outside the classroom.
How we ranked the schools
No single number tells you which school is “best”, so we looked at four areas:
| Criterion | What we used | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Academic results | Educate Jamaica High School Performance Index — the share of a school’s whole Grade 11 cohort passing five or more CSEC subjects, including English and Mathematics | Measures the entire cohort, not just the top students a school chooses to enter |
| Schools’ Challenge Quiz | TVJ Schools’ Challenge Quiz titles and finals (running since 1970) | Rewards depth of general knowledge and a strong academic culture beyond the syllabus |
| Sports | ISSA Boys & Girls Champs, Manning Cup, daCosta Cup and Headley Cup results | Signals coaching quality, discipline and school spirit |
| All-roundedness | Range of clubs, uniformed groups, performing arts, and the achievements of past students | A school should develop the whole child, not just exam candidates |
A note on the numbers: the national picture is sobering. In CSEC 2024, only about 18% of Jamaican students left school with five or more subjects including Maths and English. That is why schools posting 90%-plus are exceptional.

The schools in detail
1. Campion College (St Andrew)
Why it’s here: Campion topped the 2024 Educate Jamaica Performance Index with a perfect 100% of its Grade 11 cohort passing five or more CSEC subjects, including English and Maths. It also topped the stricter eight-subject version of the index (95%). In the 2025 CXC regional merit list, Campion led all Jamaican schools with 35 mentions, and student Mijaun Talbot tied for first in the Caribbean in CSEC Mathematics.
Best for: academically driven students who want a co-ed environment and a sixth form with a strong track record into top universities.
Keep in mind: entry is among the most competitive in the country, and the pace is demanding.
2. Immaculate Conception High School (St Andrew)
Why it’s here: Immaculate was ranked No. 1 in the 2023 index and finished a hair behind Campion in 2024 at 99.18%. It has sat at or near the top of every published ranking for more than a decade.
Best for: girls who thrive in a structured, high-expectation, faith-based environment.
Keep in mind: sports are not its headline strength compared with the academic programme.
3. St Andrew High School for Girls (St Andrew)
Why it’s here: “St Andrew High” posted 93% in 2024 and held third place in 2023. It is consistently among the top three girls’ schools in the country.
Best for: girls who want a high-achieving academic environment in the Corporate Area.
4. Ardenne High School (St Andrew)
Why it’s here: Ardenne is one of the best examples of a school that excels on more than one front. It recorded 91% in the 2024 index, jumped from 17th to 6th in 2023, and won the Schools’ Challenge Quiz in both 2020 and 2021 — giving it one of the strongest quiz records of the last decade.
Best for: students who want top-tier results in a co-ed school with a lively, competitive academic culture.
5. Wolmer’s Boys’ School (Kingston)
Why it’s here: Wolmer’s Boys was the top all-boys school in the 2024 index (90%) and the only boys’ school in the eight-subject top 10. It reached the 2021 Schools’ Challenge Quiz final. Founded in 1729, Wolmer’s is one of the oldest schools in the Caribbean.
Best for: boys who want strong academics with a deep sense of history. Its sister school, Wolmer’s Girls’, is also a perennial top-five performer.
6. Kingston College (Kingston)
Why it’s here: KC is the clearest example of all-round strength among the boys’ schools. It won ISSA Boys’ Champs in 2024 and 2025 and holds more Schools’ Challenge Quiz titles than any other school. Its choir and cultural programmes are also widely respected.
Best for: boys who want a big-school experience with elite sport and a proud tradition.
Keep in mind: its academic index scores sit below the very top academic schools, so look at the subject results that matter for your child.
7. Jamaica College (St Andrew)
Why it’s here: 2026 was a landmark year for JC. It won Boys’ Champs and, in April, beat Westwood High 30–28 to win the Schools’ Challenge Quiz for the first time since 1987. It also reached the 2025 Manning Cup final and was one of the big movers in the 2023 academic index (33rd to 20th).
Best for: boys looking for a school with momentum across sport and academics.
8. Hampton School (St Elizabeth)
Why it’s here: Founded in 1858, Hampton is one of Jamaica’s oldest girls’ schools and a boarding option rarely matched elsewhere. It placed third on the 2024 eight-subject index (88.82%) — ahead of several better-known Kingston schools.
Best for: girls (and families outside Kingston) who want a disciplined, close-knit boarding environment with top results.
9. Montego Bay High School for Girls (St James)
Why it’s here: Montego Bay High was the highest-ranked school outside the Corporate Area in 2023 and finished in the national top five. It scored 83.8% on the stricter eight-subject measure in 2024.
Best for: western Jamaica families who want Kingston-level results without the commute.
10. Glenmuir High School (Clarendon)
Why it’s here: Glenmuir in May Pen combines top-10 academics (74.8% on the 2024 eight-subject index) with competitive sport — it reached the 2025 daCosta Cup final, losing only on penalties to STETHS.
Best for: students in central Jamaica who want a co-ed school that balances books and sport.
11. Manchester High School (Manchester)
Why it’s here: Manchester High is the standout all-rounder of central Jamaica. Founded in 1855 and based on Perth Road in Mandeville, it serves roughly 1,750 students in a co-ed setting. On the sports field it won the Headley Cup in 2019 and 2024 and was runner-up in 2025. Its alumni include Olympic champions Elaine Thompson-Herah and Omar McLeod. It also fields a Schools’ Challenge Quiz team and runs cadets, Key Club, Girl Guides, drama and a wide range of sports.
Best for: students who want a large, well-rounded co-ed school with strong sport and a broad extracurricular life, without moving to Kingston.
Keep in mind: it does not currently sit in the top tier of the national academic index, so ask about results in your child’s chosen subjects and sixth-form options.
12. St Jago High School (St Catherine)
Why it’s here: St Jago is one of the most consistent Schools’ Challenge Quiz programmes of the last decade. It won the title in 2019 and 2022 and was a finalist in 2015. For Spanish Town and Portmore families, it is often the first choice for a rounded co-ed education.

How to choose the right school for your child
- Look at the whole cohort, not the top student. Ask what percentage of Grade 11 students pass five or more subjects including English and Maths.
- Match the school to the child. A strong athlete or performer may flourish more at an all-rounder than at the highest-ranked academic school.
- Factor in the commute. A long daily journey to Kingston can cost hours of study and rest.
- Ask about sixth form. Check whether the school offers CAPE in the subjects your child will need.
- Visit. Open days and conversations with current parents tell you things no ranking can.
